Daum pulls off Chili Bowl
opening night thriller!
Tulsa, OK - January 13, 2010 By: Lonnie
Wheatley
Eighteen-year-old Zach Daum of Pocahontas, IL, put the
finishing touches on a spicy Chili Bowl opener with a dramatic last-corner pass
of New Zealands Michael Pickens to win Tuesday nights 25-lap Warren
CAT Qualifying A Main event at the QuikTrip Center's Tulsa Expo
Raceway.
Daum and Pickens swapped the point several times along the way
before The Dauminator crossed underneath the Kiwi shoe exiting turn
four and surged into the lead to take the checkered flag that closed out the
first of four qualifying nights at the 24th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl
Nationals.
While Daum and the 27-year-old
Pickens took the top two positions in the nightcap, California teen Shane
Golobic snared the third and final lock-in position to Saturday nights
50-lap Chili Bowl championship main event.
Piloting his fathers
(Dan Daum) Esslinger-powered Daum Insurance No. 5d Midget, Daum earned the pole
position for the main event by accumulating the most passing points through
heat race and qualifying action.
However, it was front row outside
starter Cale Conley from West Virginia gunning into the lead at the outset and
pacing the opening circuit before a caution flew for second-row starter Dustin
Morgan, who looped it in turn two.
Twenty-one laps of wild green flag
racing action followed, with Daum racing into the lead on the second round and
then Conley finally succumbing to the advances of both sixth-starter Pickens
and third-starter Tyler Walker by the seventh lap.
Piloting Simon
Longdills Synergy V8-powered CRC/Transitainer No. 88nz Aggressor-chassis,
Pickens reeled in Daum and began pressuring for the lead as traffic came into
play at the midway point.
Pickens raced into the lead to complete the 15th lap
only to bobble in turns one and two, allowing Daum to reclaim the point as
Californias Walker entered the fray.
With just three laps
remaining, Pickens continued to work the high side of the track as Daum kept
the pressure on. And, when Pickens got the slightest bit loose exiting turn
four with the checkered flag in sight, Daum pounced on the opportunity to snare
the win.

Jerry Coons Jr. and Zach Daum score wins
in the KornHusker Klassic Memorial.
Jerry Coons Jr. and Zach Daum
scored wins in the KornHusker Klassic Memorial to Ron Hughes Jr and Sr. On Sun,
Jul 27 at Eagle,NE, Coons started on pole in the Wilke-Pak Spike-Mopar and
prevailed on a very abrasive and dusty track through two reds and several
yellows. The night started early and poorly on a hot, abrasive track and stayed
that way, with series sponsor Aaron Kirk flipping right off in the first heat
and heading home by way of the hospital. In the second and third heats it was
Rick Shuman and Keith Rauch flipping, in the Semi, Robby Ross, and in the Main,
it was Scott Fennell going over solo, after a very good run in the Semi, and
then Will Pierce, who had been involved in Keith's earlier crash, flipped. A
very tough night, but highlighted by Zach Daum's run from thirteenth to fifth,
winning the Speedway Motors Hard Charger Award The second night of the Klassic
was everything the first night had not been. With action moved to fan and racer
receptive Butler Motorplex outside of Rising City, NE, the track was well
prepped and maintained all evening; a little cooler temp, and a later start
helped keep the very fast racing clean and competitive. Daum and Coons both had
heat races won from back row starts; Coons however, had a flat front tire drop
him out of a transfer. He promptly repeated his run from last to first in a
blazing Semi which saw Bob Harr second and Jace Penetta fourth. Bobby would
crash out of the main, but Jace raced from last to finish tenth, and won the
Speedway Hard Charger Award for night two. The Main was a thriller, with Daum
starting in his family's Eagle-Esslinger and finishing first, but intense
racing for the lead all the way with Brad Kuhn in Bill Mentgens Fontana,
Brad Loyet, Davey Ray, Josh Ford who started deep in the field, and SMRS points
leader Jonathon Beason all charging off a racey cushion to pass each other and
challenge the cool and impressive Daum.

Daum "Dauminates" First Annual Turkey
Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Nov. 24, 2007) -- POWRi series regular
Zach Daum arrived in Springfield with the intention of "shaking down" a new car
before the 2008 Chili Bowl. Everyone in attendance quickly realized that there
were no bugs to be worked out when Zach came from the back of the pack to win
his heat race in convincing fashion. Zach then used his front row starting
position to lead all twenty laps of the A feature. Although there was never a
contest for the lead the racing for 2nd place definitely raised the temperature
for all of the spectators who braved freezing temperatures to see a great show.
A yellow flag on lap 2 for the spinning car of Mike Cooper bunched up the
field. The restart saw the first red flag in OMMS history when Evan Pardo got
upside down in turn 2. When the green flag flew the crowd witnessed a dogfight
for the runner up spot between the cycle powered cars of Merril Lamb and Beau
Heavelow and the traditional midgets of Kevin Bayer and Jason Dull. After nine
laps of hard core racing Lamb slipped from 2nd to to 6th when he felt that he
had a tire going down. Bayer and Heavelow settled into 2nd and 3rd while Merril
used the remaining 8 laps to sneak back by Eddie Sauer and Dull to finish in
4th. After ducking into the pits due to damage sustained on the lap 3 red flag,
Barry Lamb put on a passing clinic to charge from the rear to to 6th with a
slightly damaged car.
